EVENT 3: Noise Aquarium Online Mediation: Oxygen for South Asia

  (Cherry)           For my event, I went to the Noise Aquarium Online Mediation: Oxygen for South Asia. As soon as I entered the event, I was struck by the diversity of the organizers. We had people coming in from different parts of the world and from different academic backgrounds. That in itself demonstrated the type of collaboration that one hopes to see between the arts and sciences as described by Professor Vesna in her paper- “Towards a Third Culture: Being in Between”.  Additionally, I thought how if it wasn’t for the major developments of computers and technology connecting with people around the world simultaneously would not be possible. Hence, it appears that technology is enabling the collaboration of individuals of vastly different backgrounds and interests. WEEK 9: SPACE + ART

        This week’s topic was of particular interest to me because I never thought about connecting art and space. Much like other scientific and artistic collaborations, the collaboration between these two disciplines appears to be a symbiotic relationship (mutually beneficial relationship).    (Sagan)        Art enables the creation of awareness of space. Professor Vesna mentions that one of the first examples of an artist that brought awareness to space exploration is Carl Sagan with his illustration of the Pale Blue Dot. Since then many other artists have helped create awareness of space exploration. For example, Richelle Gribble spoke about how satellite images together with artistic collaboration enabled the visualization of the earth from above as seen from space. WEEK 8: Nanotechnology + Art

         Nanotechnology is a relatively new field, hence, I was particularly intrigued by the collaboration between nanotechnology and art. This week’s class material and outside material have enabled me to understand that the collaboration between these two fields helps advance both fields.                     Nanotechnology enhances the creation of some very visually pleasing artworks. An example of this is “ Nanomandala consists of a 15min video projected onto a disk of sand, 8 feet in diameter”, and is “a modern interpretation of an ancient tradition that consecrates the planet and its inhabitants to bring about purification and healing” (Curtin).   I was just absolutely amazed by this project and how many possibilities for advanced artistic explorations nanotechnology creates. EVENT 2: Midterm Presentations

    (Hardy)         For my event, I attended the midterm presentations. “The last decade or so has seen substantial interdisciplinary activity between the arts and sciences”  (Pepperell).   I thought that interdisciplinary collaboration was clearly represented in presentations I viewed with projects involving AI music, Solar Art, and so on. Viewing my peers' projects, I was immediately struck by how artsy they were. I recall being very hesitant to do anything overtly artsy for I felt as a STEM student it was not my place or I will not execute it well. It helped me realize how much I have internalized the divide between scientists and artists that C.P Snow describes. Viewing my peers’ more artsy projects made me want to have a more arts-focused project for my finals. WEEK 7: Neuroscience + Art

  (Bartolini and Franck Polleux )           This week’s course was extremely insightful and helped me gain a new sense of appreciation for the importance of collaboration between neuroscience and art. The blog below will discuss how neuroscience can be used to enhance artistic perspective, and how art has led to breakthroughs in neuroscience.
